Seasonal Hiring Trends: What HR Needs to Know to Win this Season’s Rush

By |Last Updated: May 28, 2025|4.9 min read|

Every year, HR leaders prepare for the seasonal hiring surge like clockwork. But let’s be honest, it doesn’t feel like clockwork, does it? The market shifts. Candidates’ expectations evolve. And just when you think you’ve perfected your hiring strategy, recruitment tactics change. As someone who’s spent over a decade in talent acquisition and another in business development, I’ve learned one thing for certain: the only constant in seasonal hiring trends is change.

Staying informed of these trends and being strategic about your approach means staying ahead of the rush. It ensures you’re hiring smarter, not harder.

Factors Impacting Seasonal Hiring Trends

Behind every seasonal hiring rush lies a perfect storm of shifting expectations, evolving work habits, and hard-to-ignore labor market realities. In my research and experience, there are four market factors influencing seasonal hiring trends right now.

Ignoring these forces can make or break your strategy.

#1 Ongoing Demand for High-Volume Roles

High-volume roles like warehouse associates, retail clerks, and delivery drivers never go out of season. And the competition for these professionals is fierce.

You’re not just competing with the business down the street anymore. You’re competing with gig apps, remote options, and roles offering flexibility and fast pay. Volume hiring now demands personalization at scale. And that can be difficult to get right.

#2 Retention Challenges for Hourly Roles

Let’s talk turnover. Hourly employees tend to leave roles frequently. Studies show that 50% of hourly employees quit within the first 120 days at a new job. And when it comes to seasonal roles, loyalty isn’t a given. It has to be earned.

From my own experience, companies that invest in proper onboarding see longer tenures and better performance.

#3 Changes in Employee Motivations

Gen Z makes up 42% of the seasonal workforce, and they have different ideas and values from previous generations. They want meaning, flexibility, and fast feedback.

If you’re hiring Gen Z this season, you need to speak their language. Be transparent. Highlight your values. Offer flexible scheduling and quick communication.

#4 The Gig Economy and the Demand for Flexibility

Almost 60 million Americans performed freelance or gig work last year. That’s 36% of the total US workforce. Many of them prefer gig work over traditional seasonal jobs because of the flexibility it offers.

HR leaders need to rethink rigid schedules. Can you offer flexible shift selection? On-demand pay?

3 Seasonal Hiring Trends:

Use the following seasonal hiring trends to guide your high volume hiring:

The Season Always Starts Early

The early bird really does get the best talent. I would recommend you start your seasonal strategy in Q1. Yes, even for holiday hiring. Why? Because proactive planning leads to better onboarding, better training, and ultimately, better results.

Your hires need time to train and align with your brand values and company culture. Particularly for industries like hospitality, leisure and tourism, and travel, where customer services have a huge impact.

AI is Making It Easier to Hire Seasonal Workers

Tools like chatbots for screening, automated interview scheduling, and intelligent job matching have changed seasonal hiring. For high-volume seasonal roles, AI can reduce time-to-hire by up to 50%.

But tech is only part of the solution. You still need that human touch. In my opinion, it’s a good idea to let AI handle the repetitive tasks, but let your team handle the relationships. When both work together, hiring becomes scalable and personal.

Employer Branding Makes All the Difference

Your brand matters, especially for seasonal roles. 75% of job seekers consider an employer’s brand before applying. And with Gen Z and Millennials leading the seasonal workforce, reputation is everything.

Highlight your values and what it’s like to actually work for you. Share behind-the-scenes videos. Show off your team culture.

Be aware of online review sites and what your former employees are saying about you. Build up reviews on these platforms so that your online reputation is credible to today’s savvy applicants.

What Is The Busiest Time Period for Hiring Seasonal Workers?

Being aware of the seasonal hiring trends can help you beat the competition, but not if you’re too slow to the game.

Summer Hiring

Summer is prime time for increased seasonal hiring industries like:

  • 1
    Hospitality
  • 2
    Travel
  • 3
    Tourism
  • 4
    Agriculture
  • 5
    Construction

Last year, Deloitte reported that six in ten Americans planned to travel that summer. Additionally, 52% planned to fly domestically. This kind of trend creates massive spikes in demand for front-line staff at hotels, resorts, and restaurants.

And it’s not just hospitality. Retailers, like Target and Amazon, often begin staffing for their summer warehouse and delivery needs as early as late spring.

Essentially, if you need a high volume of employees in the summer and you’re not planning in Q1, you’re already playing catch-up.

Winter Hiring

Then comes the end-of-year holiday madness. Between October and December, seasonal hiring hits its peak, especially in retail and logistics.

I’ve worked with national brands that start recruiting holiday help right after Labor Day. Why? Because top talent is snatched up quickly. Starting in Q3 allows you to find the right people, train and onboard them, and give them longer to align with your brand. The better the onboarding, the more likely they are to be repeat hires too!

Think Beyond the Season

Ultimately, if you want to succeed in seasonal hiring, you need to be planning for it all year round. That way it’s not a last-minute rush that sees poor results. Build talent pipelines early, nurture candidate relationships even during the off-season, and don’t overlook the power of internal referrals and employee advocacy.

And finally, align your employer brand with what today’s workforce actually cares about: flexibility, fairness, and values. When you show up with clarity and purpose, the right people show up for you.
