When it comes to building your leadership team, your executive search strategy is everything. I’ve seen even the most successful companies fall short when it comes to hiring leadership because they treat executive hiring like filling any other role. But it’s not. Your executive team sets the tone, direction, and culture for the entire organization. Essentially, one bad hire at the top can impact the entire business, or even stall a company’s momentum completely.
With the right search strategy, you can sidestep the pitfalls and build leadership that truly accelerates growth.
10 Common Mistakes Hiring Managers Make When Hiring Executives
I’ve worked with hundreds of hiring managers, and while every company is different, the challenges they face are surprisingly consistent.
Here are the top mistakes I have seen that can impact the success of an executive search strategy:
Tips for Hiring Executives
Now that we’ve looked at what not to do, let’s talk about how to get it right. These are some best practices I’ve refined over my career to help clients across industries find and keep top-tier leaders.
Define Your Mission-Critical Needs Upfront
What’s keeping your team up at night? Whether it’s scaling operations, turning around a division, or launching in a new market, your ideal exec should be able to solve that problem.
Look for people with experience in that area and have ideas about how to improve your current approach.
Think About Leadership Style, Not Just Accomplishments
In my experience, alignment between a leader’s style and your culture is what makes or breaks long-term success. Similarly, a brilliant strategist who bulldozes teams might do more harm than good.
This is where assessments that identify leadership strengths can come in handy during the interview process.
Use A Scorecard to Reduce Bias
Create a clear, objective scorecard based on key success factors for the role. Ultimately, this helps standardize feedback and prevents decision-making based solely on likability or charisma.
While it’s important to find leaders who resonate with your culture, it’s important to not unconsciously prioritize candidates who align with existing leadership styles and values. A little is good, don’t get me wrong! But you don’t want homogeneity and “groupthink” in your leadership team.
Prioritize the Candidate Experience
Remember, these are senior leaders with options. If your hiring process feels disjointed or impersonal, they’ll walk away. A smooth, respectful process reflects well on your brand and builds trust from day one.
Think Globally
Particularly in industries that have long-standing talent shortages, biotech, tech, and healthcare, for example, it can be useful to widen the net. Remote hiring, relocation or even remote leadership is the new normal, and your executive search strategy should reflect that.
Better Leadership Hires Begin With Better Search Strategies
I’ve seen firsthand how the right leader can unlock growth, inspire transformation, and rally a team around a new vision. Similarly, I’ve seen what happens when the wrong one slows everything down. And that’s why your executive search strategy has to be intentional, data-driven, and future-focused.
Today, great leaders have lots of options. Attracting them to your organization requires a clear story, a strong culture, and a hiring experience that reflects your values from day one. Furthermore. when you do that right, the ripple effects can change everything, from performance to morale and long-term innovation.
